Andrew Lloyd Webber - Requiem (1985) - Requiem & Kyrie

A little boy comes on the scene and sing otherworldly melody of eternal peace. Then he's joined by other children's voices, followed by Sarah Brightman and Placido Domingo. Andrew Lloyd Webber again daringly mixes classical and jazz traditions in his secret alchemical laboratory and have one of the best requiems of 20th century at the output. This music is more serious than one might expect from the author of most famous musicals - this music is born from personal pain and dedicated to the memory of his father.

Robert Schumann (1810-1856) - Scenes from Childhood - Child Falling Asleep (1838)

In my opinion, Schumann is maybe most complicated romantic composer ever. His multilayer textures are difficult to perform, his unspoken phrases are difficult to understand, his hidden behind the notes literaly relations are diffecult to read. And (don't know, maybe only for me) very difficult to find a performance, in which Schumann isn't seems like a rudiment of the remote past that's revering only habitually. I've listened to all classical performances, but my heart was touched only one time, when this music resounded quite a new way in the hands of young Chinese pianist Lang Lang.

Here we can hear an amazing voice of very popular Polish-Russian female singer Anna German assume an unusual role in quite notable aria of Domenico Scarlatti. The voice in this aria often appears solo, without any instruments, as if it answering to them and calling for dialog. And this solo voice is contrastingly unhurried, as though a lifestream was interrupted for a moment by a falling autumn leaf.

Orthrelm - OV (2005)

This is maybe the most radical music I've ever heard. "It's... it's dentist's drill!", "Saw, Shura, saw!" and other quotations comes to mind in connection with this music. Besides that this music is really like a free variations on the sound of dentist's drill, here are breaking some rules of propriety about an amount of repeats of one little fragment. But these mad guys contrives to perform it live, and that's unbelievable, because their fingers must begin to smoke at some moment!
Striking rhythmics and always different atonal riffs, instrumental asceticism (only guitar and percussion) and an ability to build huge composition from very limited amount of elements, a combination of extreme constructivism and maximum expression - it's Orthrelm.

Gyorgy Ligeti (1923-2006) - Coulée (1969)

If you hear some amorphous and amoeboid music and think, who is so wise to invent this, remember Hungarian avant-gardist Gyorgy Ligeti. Solid sound flow with microchanges inside is his strong point. In this organ work a continuous rotation of some celestial body becomes almost visible, and it's living shape not for a moment remains the same.

Richard Wagner - "Tristan and Isolde" - Act III - Prelude

Anna Mayilyan - Khorhurd Khorin

Several years ago I was at a concert of Djivan Gasparyan in Moscow, but most of the concert remember a performance of a female singer Anna Mailyan, who sang a solo ancient Armenian religious chants. These tunes should be in school to learn some cultural fundamentals, but alas! it's very hard to find any audio recordings of these songs here, not to mention the studies. In the web I found only one recording of Anna Mailyan's solo singing (a sharakan by Khachatur Taronetsi from the 13th century), so I want to share it with you.

Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) - Violin sonata No. 1, part 3

A very exquisite and charmingly mysterious theme of the slow part of Prokofiev's violit sonata seems to me endless and unachievable like via lactea or nothern lights. Prokofiev is like no other knows how to create a fairy tale and mystery, and a spectral light hides behind each of his sounds. In life he was so business and punctual, but in music I invariably see him like astrologer, who secretely wipes dust from the stars on the night firmament and carefully keeps fallen stars on a bookshelf under a transparent glass.

Frederic Chopin. Piano concerto No. 1. Part 2.

We were in Warsaw this summer and have heard there Chopin in a very unusual performance on an old 19th century grand piano with an orchestra of old instruments. I've never heard nothing of this kind, and it was the discovery of completely new Chopin to me. In this recording the difference between old and contemporary instruments slightly less audible than in a concert hall (an old grand piano have considerably more quiet and "flat" sound, and microphones makes it less evident), but it's uncomparable delightful to listen. So, at last here is a music that can be called exorbitantly beautiful in the most ordinary meaning of this word.

Apophallation - Contradictor/Accomodator (2007) - fence plowing

Another answer to the surrounding noise is making music directly from the noise, that led to an extreme maximum. It's like a belated revenge of your old modem. Or like a pressure point massage of your brain. It helped me sometimes at the time of examinations to enable the erogenous zones of my mind. In Apophallation music there are one of most clean and academic variants of noise, without cloudy presence of "musical" sounds. But I recommend you to turn down the volume before listening.

Luciano Berio (1925-2003) - Sinfonia (1968), parts 3-4

So, the same Swingle Singers in one of key musical compositions of 20th century - Sinfonia Berio. Exactly from this work begins post-modernism, polystylism and collage technique in music. Specifically in this third part there are very many quotations like Mahler's scherzo as the basis, and also Ravel, Debussy, Schoenberg, Beethoven, Stravinsky and others, plus texts of Joyce and Beckett. Age of sound recording and radio completely turns our idea about the nature of music, when you simultaneously hear very different musical sounds - from neighbours, from the street, from music shops, from riding cars, from different radio stations... When you turned on into reality, all these sounds interwines in one united music.

Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Sonata No. 7 (1798) - II. Largo e mesto

It seems to me that this Glenn Gould's performance of this music is unbearably slow and lonely. About 6th minute it even becomes scary. Frightened by some inscrutable absoluteness of solitude, like in the face of death. As if the whole world suddenly appears before your eyes in the dazzling beauty, which had never before noticed, and at this very moment you realize that saying goodbye to him forever.

Lambchop - How I quit smoking (1996) - For which we are truly thankful

Beat Furrer - FAMA (2005) - Scene IV

I was at the dress rehearsal of this opera in Moscow about three years ago. The huge hangar, in the center of which the cube located, formed by rotating vertical leafs (see picture here), and opposite sides of these leafs are reflecting sound differently. The roof can also be opened. Spectators are sitting inside the cube, and almost all the musicians are placed outside. Effect of being "inside" the music is colossal. In this scene singers sometimes appears inside the cube, sometimes go outside, echoing sounds are mixing and hanging somewhere under the roof, and the roof is riding quietly (in Russian "his roof is riding" means that someone is off his rocker).

Heirmos: When Israel walked on foot in the deep as on dry land, on seeing their pursuer Pharaoh drowned, they cried: Let us sing to God a song of victory.
Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.
Now I, a burdened sinner, have approached Thee, my Lord and God. But I dare not raise my eyes to heaven. I only pray, saying: Give me, O Lord, understanding, that I may weep bitterly over my deeds.
Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.
O woe is me, a sinner! Wretched am I above all men. There is no repentance in me. Give me, O Lord, tears, that I may weep bitterly over my deeds.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Foolish, wretched man, thou art wasting thy time in idleness! Think of thy life and turn to the Lord God, and weep bitterly over thy deeds.
Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Theotokion: Most pure Mother of God, look upon me, a sinner, and deliver me from the snares of the devil, and guide me to the way of repentance, that I may weep bitterly over my deeds.

If I'll try to tell the history of music of the last millennium in a nutshell, it would look something like this: the first 600 years it was the rule of polyphony, where the internally independent voices living their lives, obeying the standarts of communal conduct, but not forming alliances, and in the next 300-400 years the basis of music was harmony, where the main thing - chord, polyphonic accord, where even the number of voices does not matter, and only one independent voice above it - the melody, for which other voices like rose petals under your feet. Time of the meeting of polyphony and harmony - as the meeting of two lovers. One of the first composers through the heart of which was the blast of this meeting - Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. These first triad - as snowdrops, in our hearing, they may seem insipid as pasta without salt, but it's worth to enter the taste and the soft light of this music fills hunger like manna from heaven.

Jürgen Knieper - Wings of Desire (1987) - Kathedrale Der Bucher

From the soundtrack of Wim Wenders's "Wings of Desire".
A rare bird from the soundtrack will reach the middle of the scroll bar. In the movie it can be awesome, but alone it usually brings boredom. But here is an example of how with the simplest means, practically on only two notes created a whole symphony of many voices, actually creating a feeling of complete transparency of human souls in the eyes of angels.

Conlon Nancarrow - Study for player piano No.18 (~1946-1960)

Conlon Nancarrow is a wonderful American composer, who wrote most of his works for player piano. Only on this rare musical instrument was possible to maintain precisely the rhythmic patterns that he discovered in his music. Pianists of past could not perform it exactly. He was creating a set of independent rhythmic layers that are intrically interact with each other, for all this often giving rise to blues combinations. This study seems to me an illustration of how neuronal connections are appears in mind like a shining stars in active thinking.
This composer suddenly appeared very close to me, I use in almost the same technique, in particular, in the work "Blessed", that will be performed again on October 30 in the concert hall at Kislovka at 19:00. And I also did not perform perfectly these complex rhythms - though perhaps this time will be?

The truth is that an intellectual electronic music like IDM even in the most academic instances makes me scare of it's poetics of raged cuddly toys. I imagine in details those packs of clockwork little penguins going to take vengeance on humanity for their lack of love and for their cruelty. Here it's presented too, but so pretend that I not afraid. Lightness and ornate sophistication of this lightness stirs up child's delight, as if someone inflated at once about hundred of baloons in front of the astonished kid.

Arnold Schoenberg - Quartet No.1 (1905) (fragment)

The box hummed softly, and distant chord hung in mid-air nearby, seemed to get at your fingertips. Gregorovius began to stand up, still a little shocked. He does not like Schoenberg, but that's not the point - the late hour, a sick child, all prohibitions are violated. Exactly, all prohibitions are violated. And yet, what an idiot. But sometimes he had such bouts, a certain order was avenging him for what he despised them. Right on the floor, almost putting his head in a shoe box, Maga, it seems, was asleep. From time to time heard snuffling of Rocamadour, but Gregorovius had been more and more immersed in music - and suddenly discovered that can yield and meekly allow himself to lead, settle for a while in this long time ago dead and buried resident of Vienna.
J.Cortazar. Hopscotch.

Under Byen - Alt Er Tabt (2010) - 8

In all that makes the Danish band Under Byen dispersed some curative laziness. Too lazy to sing loudly, too lazy to take care about the harmony of chords and to sync them with melody, too lazy to make complete and formalized tunes and, in this case, too lazy to perform 8th beat of the bar.

Åke Parmerud - Grains of voices (1995)

Written by a former rocker history of the world, narrated by sounds within half an hour, is maybe the only one academic electronic composition that I can call great. In due time "Grains of voices" went for a ride by the wheel through my life and changes my idea about possibilities of electroacoustic music forever, so profound was the result of mixing the intonations of many voices of all nations into the one musical whole. In addition it's one of the strongest examples of reconsidered quoting of another's music. Dismembered into pieces "Dido's Lament" here runs all through the final segment, gradually passing from a drama to a ritual up to the final Armageddon, when the noise of voices overflowed Earth, and God cried: "Silence!".

Henry Purcell (1659-1695). Dido and Aeneas (~1688) - Dido's Lament

Wait, where in this exclusive collection, where we listen to the 1st Mozart's Symphony instead of 40th, this unconditional superhit of Baroque music from? The fact is that without this music the perception of other music that I will be upload later will be incomplete. So what can say a mortal about Purcell's "Dido's Lament" that will outlive us all? Just again wonder how this music for so many ages remains so keenly modern and capable of causing tears of even unmusical people. Dido cries about her husband leaving her for a debt, and falls to the sword, and that's the ending of the opera. It is also one of most famous examples of so-called basso ostinato, when the descending bass line repeated over and over again without any changes, almost like a modern loops, only much, much slower.

Jethro Tull - Benefit (1970) - Sossity You're a Woman

This early example of art-rock can puzzle even a professional. Some time I was honestly trying to count changes of measure, but soon I've waved goodbye to it. It's not enough that time signature in this song changes almost in every bar, moreover the melody seems to be existing completely parallel to the accompaniment in it's own movement and direction. And when even harmonies will float somewhere up... "How not to cry here, how not to laugh?" ("Aquarium"). I don't understand, how it was possible to compose and perform, it requires a very different brain structure.

Hector Berlioz. Tristia (1852) - Marche funèbre

French composer Hector Berlioz (1803-1869), who raised dramatic qualities of music on a new height, had an inclination for loud special effects. One day he was marching at the head of an orchestra of about 200 performers (26 clarinets, 10 trombones, 6 tubes, 13 percussionists and so on) through the streets of Paris with his Triumphal-funeral symphony. In this piece he is making a big boom in the end too. Usually such love for special effects is a lot of botchers, but in this case it's an integral and for someone favorite part of his artistic nature, Berlioz is one of most great genius of orchestra for the whole history of orchestral music.

Contemporary music have been in close and deep relations with a music of the Middle Ages. If not believe in spiral of time, it's hard to explain, how these very refined harmonies are so much ahead of time and what's the hell is going on with the rhythm. In such moments you think that if beauty want to say something to us through the ages, it's primarily about immutability of beauty.

Portishead - Third (2008) - Hunter

The last album of Portishead overfilled with that strange feeling that I call "mystic goose pimples", when sound goes somewhere underneath my skin. This is another example when really complex music can be extremely popular. 10 years of silence for one album is a big price for a big art.

Franz Liszt - At the grave of Richard Wagner (1883)

Late works of Franz Liszt have been rarer performing by pianists. They have a lack of virtuousity, this music is often simple and meditative. It's surprising to me how so strong aspiration for meditation and prayer in music is permanently revealing in his powerful and passionate nature and increasing up to radically simplification of style and reversal of that virtuosic pianism, the symbol of which he is till now.
Wagner was a close friend of Liszt and at the same time his son-in-law. In 1883 Liszt was already 72 years old, he outlive Wagner just by 3 years. Of course, it was a bereavement to him, but what a Lohengrin's light and childlike open-hearted love impressed in this music with such a simplicity, that came from a very good taste and huge experience in music. Liszt wasn't need to amaze or conquer anybody, he was expressing by music more precisely and sincerely than many of us by words.

Mozart - Symphony No.1

Although it seems that Mozart is a most famous composer of all times, from all of his symphonies there are well-known last opuses (39-41) and rather known 35-38, but a major portion of his early symphonies are collecting dust on museum shelves. But one of my most favorite Mozart's symphonies is No.1. This is a strange story - other children's symphonies (written by 8-aged child prodigy) are considerably more formal, I feel more a learning process with his father Leopold Mozart than a really live music in them. But here, in first, is a startling charm in all three parts, where we will listen to the first part. This strange contrast of fanfare theme and soft chords with a very beautiful suspension of an oboe in 4-th chord, this playful second theme, where with future brand Mozart gesture a brilliant melody have been borning from nothing, this for some reason so poignant transformation of main chords into a minor in the development, multiplied by a huge talent of conductor Karl Böhm and Berliner Philarmoniker - how can anybody resist this?

Heinz Holliger. "Schneewittchen" (1998). Prolog.

To be honest, the opera itself (that considering the fairytale from a viewpoint of contemporary psychoanalysis) feels so boring to me that I was never listening to it till the end. But prolog sounds as yet too suddenly finishing but fully independent work of unbelievable, charming beauty. If anybody will ask me about a music for a beginning of listening to a contemporary academic music, maybe I will recommend this one. This music is immidiately tossing you up to a completely new space. Who knows, will I ever learn to create something like that? It's a wonder of our time.

Valery Gavrilin - Russian notebook (1964) - Stradalnaya

Chivalry of Valery Gavrilin you usually can't detect at one moment, it comes with time. On the background of ordinary "national" music written with receipt "get this russian theme and add pathos" Gavrilin's music sounds like challenge, it's inconceivable brilliant. Russian art occasionally can touch heart so much that can't do any other art - it's Norshteyn's "Hedgehog in the Fog", it's Tarkovsky's "Andrey Rublev", it's Shostakovich's "Katerina Izmailova", for example... In Gavrilin's music you just can't find anything, this music is shockingly empty - almost without notes, without many possibilities for theoretical analysis. How can he do it?

Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007) - Invisible Choirs (1979)

"Invisible choirs" by legendary 20th century avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen is a music from an opera "Thursday" from a huge opera cycle "Light: The Seven Days of the Week". The opera "Thursday" has been born chronologically first of seven. 16-channel choir recording that sings about the end of the world used in the opera like a background to an action (Michael's youth in act 1 and his return from a travel in act 3), but can be performed independently. Time in Stockhausen's music pass in a different way - it is cyclic and don't have borders. Sometimes it seems that music really can sound infinitely, and I wonder how it can be simultaneously so static and so interesting, trere are always occur some compex cosmic processes inside. This composition is 47 minutes long, so we will listen to a small fragment.
