Есть личности, вокруг которых, как маленькие слушатели захватывающей сказки, собирается в круг хорошая музыка. Я искал "Арлезианку" Бизе, с которой как будто бы сняли пыль времени, открыв забытую свежесть красок. Конечно, я нашёл её только у сэра Джона Элиота Гардинера, едва ли не крупнейшего дирижёра наших дней. Более того, на соседнем диске я нашёл такого Берлиоза, что тоже не могу не поделиться - каждая мелодия обладает какой-то уникальной глубиной и мягкостью, и слушаешь затаив дыхание, не зная, что будет дальше.
There are persons, around which as a little listeners of breathtaking fairytale a good music gathers into a circle. I was looking for "Arlesienne" by Bizet, which seemed to have removed the dust of time, revealing a forgotten freshness of colors. And, of course, I've find it only in the performance of Sir John Eliot Gardiner, maybe the greatest conductor of our times. Moreover, on another CD of this album I found such Berlioz that I can't resist to share: each melody have some unique depth and softness, and you're listening with bated breath not knowing what will be further.

Adam de la Halle - "The Play of Robin and Marion" (~1275) - Perronelle

Менестрели, трубадуры, труверы, миннезингеры, скоморохи - разные наименования профессиональных бродячих музыкантов Средневековья. Можно сказать, поп-музыка того времени. В основном это устная традиция, но многое было записано. Ансамбль Персеваль очень напоминает мне группу Dead Can Dance, но находится по другую сторону баррикад между академической и популярной музыкой, относясь всё же к "академикам". Тем не менее, слушая эту музыку (из пьесы "Игра о Робене и Марион" с большим количеством музыки, которую иногда рассматривают как прообраз оперы) трувера 13 века Адама де ла Аля, известного также как Адам Горбатый (был повешен в 1287 году), я удивляюсь, что популярная музыка того времени звучит столь современной. Более того, это, можно сказать, идеальная средневековая музыка. Это то, что, как мне кажется, любой современный человек хотел бы услышать при этом словосочетании, это прямой ответ на простой запрос фантазии о замках, рыцарях, странствиях и сумеречной свободе.
Minstrels, troubadours, trouvères, minnesingers, skomorokhs are different names of professional strolling musicians of the Middle Ages. One can say, pop music of that time. This is mainly an verbal folklore tradition, but much has been written down. Ensemble Perceval reminds me the band Dead Can Dance, but it is on the other side of the barricade between the academic and popular music and still belongs to the "academics". Nevertheless, when I've listening to this music (from the play "The Game of Robin and Marion" with lots of music, which is sometimes regarded as a prototype of the opera) of 13th century trouvère Adam de la Halle, also known as Adam Hunchback (was hanged in 1287), I am surprised that the popular music of these far times sounds so modern. Moreover, possible to say that it is the ideal medieval music. This is I think exactly that music that any contemporary person would like to hear after the phrase "medieval music", it's a direct response to a simple query of fantasy about castles, knights, wanderings and the twilight freedom.

Alfred Schnittke - Concerto grosso No.2, part 2 (1982)

Это музыка для меня связана с первым глубоким переживанием смерти и до сих пор остаётся в сознании в качестве некоей смертной памяти. Не настоящей смерти, а именно той, что приходит через эти звуки, но воспринимается как своя. Шнитке несомненно обладал трансцендентным опытом и как никто другой постоянно щупал и доискивался, как оно там - с другой стороны? В третьей и четвёртой части этого Concerto grosso он забрался очень далеко. А мы послушаем вторую часть, медленные и страшные вариации на очень с виду простое расходящееся ostinato.
This music is related for me with the first deep experience of death and till now remains in my consciousness in the capacity of some memory of death. Not a real death but exactly that which came in these sounds and grasped like own. Schnittke definetely had some transcendental experience and like no other had continually touching and finding out about one question - how it is to be there, on another side? In third and fourth parts of this Concerto grosso he reached very far about this. And we will listen to the second part, slow and scary variations on in looks very simple divergent ostinato.

Nautilus Pompilius - "Наугад" / "At random" (1990) - Black birds

Пожалуй, единственная рок-композиция, как-то отвечающая "Лесному царю" - "Чёрные птицы" группы Nautilus Pompilius. "Лесной царь" уникален тем, что один певец поёт сразу за 4-х персонажей - рассказчика, отца, ребёнка и самого Лесного царя. В этой же философской притче о природе страха персонажей лишь на одного меньше - рассказчик, царь и Чёрные птицы. В обеих композициях напряжение каждую секунду нарастает до самого конца. Разница реплик персонажей в этой песне подчёркивается ритмически - тараторящий рассказчик, более степенный царь и дерзкая пропажа одной восьмой в репликах птиц - размер меняется с 6/8 на 5/8, в котором песня и заканчивается. Кроме того, это единственная известная мне песня, начинающаяся с тритонанты (весьма далёкой от основного тона тональности на расстоянии тритона). Также меня давно интересует такая тема, как магическое камлание в концовках рок-композиций, когда музыка закольцовывается в какой-то заклинающий круг - здесь это тоже есть, как и почти в каждой композиции этого одного из лучших, на мой взгляд, альбомов русского рока.
Perhaps the only rock song somehow responsible to Schubert's "Erl King" is "Black Birds" of Nautilus Pompilius. "Erl King" is unique in that a singer sings right over the four characters - the narrator, father, child and the Erl King. And in this philosophical parable about the nature of fear are three characters, only one less - the narrator, the king and the Black birds. In both compositions, the suspence increases every second until the end. The different cues of characters in the song emphasizes by the rhythmic - jabbering narrator, than more sedate king and the daring theft of one quaver at the cues of birds, where the time signature changes from 6/8 to 5/8, in which the song ends. In addition, it is only known to me song that starts with tritonic key (es-moll, when the main key is a-moll). I have also long been interested in such topic as a magical shamanistic ritual in the end of rock songs when the music is looped into some conjuring circle - here it is, too, like almost in every song in this one of the best, in my opinion, Russian rock albums. I'm sorry if it's too difficult for my poor English.

Franz Schubert - Erlkönig (1815)

Когда речь идёт о заигранной и наизусть изученной классике, периодически возникает желание найти исполнение, которое бы стёрло весь этот опыт и помогло открыть музыку заново. И я задался целью найти такого "Лесного царя", который заставил бы меня вновь пережить с замиранием сердца давно знакомую историю. Результат не заставил себя долго ждать. Во-первых, я нашёл в YouTube отличный современный мультфильм на эту музыку, а во-вторых, задействованное в нём исполнение оказалось тем самым музыкальным событием, которого я так искал. Также в Интернете доступен текст самой баллады Гёте с переводом на русский. Итак, вновь и сызнова "Лесной царь" Шуберта в исполнении потрясающего английского тенора Йена Бостриджа.
When we're talking about worn out and known by heart classical music, periodically we want to find such performance that can wipe off all our previous experience and help to discover this music all over again. And I've set myself the task to find such "Erlking" that can force me to feel anew with a sinking heart this very familiar story. And the result isn't kept me waiting for a long time. Firstly I've find in YouTube the perfect contemporary animation on this music, and secondly the performance used in this animation is exactly the one musical event I've looking for. Also in Internet you can see the original text of Goethe's ballad with an English translation. So, once again and afresh Schubert's "Erlking" in the performance of the amazing English tenor Ian Bostridge.

Fantomas - "Delirium cordia" (2003) / Pierre Henry - "Voile d'Orphee" (1953)

В этой монументальной электроакустической работе группы Fantomas я столкнулся с необычным вариантом цитирования. Ближе к концу здесь появляется точная цитата из музыки патриарха электроакустической музыки Пьера Анри "Покрывало Орфея", органично вплетённая в композицию, обросшая дополнительными звуками и даже соединённая с другими местами альбома тематическими связями. У меня была мысль, что, учитывая ровно 50 лет разницы между этими творениями, "Delirium cordia" вполне могла быть посвящена 50-летию создания одной из первых электроакустических композиций. Сравните эти два отрывка:
In this monumental electroacouctic work by "Fantomas" I was faced with an unusual case of quoting. Toward the end there the exact quote from the music of the patriarch of electroacoustic music Pierre Henry "Voile d'Orphee" appears, organically interwoven into the composition, covered with additional sounds and even connected by thematic links with other places of album. I had thought that, taking into consideration exactly 50 years between these two creations, "Delirium cordia" could well be devoted to the 50th anniversary of one of the first electroacoustic compositions. Claude Debussy - "Syrinx" for flute solo (1913)

Писать для одноголосного сольного инструмента - задача трудная и неблагодарная. Трудная, потому что не хватает полнозвучия гармонии, да и возможности инструмиента ограничены. Неблагодарная, потому что для слушания такой музыки требуется большая концентрация внимания, и в концертных залах она звучит сравнительно редко. Пьеса Дебюсси в этом смысле исключительна - от неё невозможно оторваться. Он делает со слушателем то, что заклинатель змей с коброй или гамельнский крысолов с маленькими детьми - одною мелодией заставляет забыть о себе и следовать за ним.
Composing music for solo voice instrument is a difficult and thankless task. Difficult because it lacks harmonic soundfulness, and a possibilities of an instrument are limited. Thankless because the listening to such music demands great attention, and it sounds relatively rare in concert halls. Debussy's "Syrinx" for flute solo in this sense is exceptional, it is impossible to lose contact with it. Debussy acts with listener like the snake-charmer with a cobra or the Pied Piper of Hamelin with kids - with one melody makes us forget ourselves and follow him.

Allan Pettersson - Symphony No.12 (1974) - I. The Dead of the Square

Шведский композитор Аллан Петтерссон (1911-1980) - моё персональное открытие и личная любовь. После того как 4 года назад я раструбил о нём в Рунете, музыка его получила в России некоторое распространение, но всё ещё остаётся практически неизвестной и нигде не исполняемой. Мне трудно объяснить, почему такая крупная фигура продолжает оставаться в тени, но положение это пока не меняется.
12-я симфония написана на стихи чилийского поэта и политика Пабло Неруды из 5-й части "Canto General", посвящённой массовому убийству рабочих во время забастовки 1946 года в Сантьяго. 12-ю симфонию часто уподобляют реквиему. Это единственная симфония Петтерссона, где задействован хор, что делает из неё симфонию-кантату. Экпрессия в его музыке всегда бьёт через край, а формы сквозные, непрерывно перетекающие из одного состояния в другое и достигающие огромных масштабов.
Swedish composer Allan Pettersson (1911-1980) is my personal discovery and intimate love. When 4 years ago I trumpeted it in RuNet, his music has spread to some extent in Russia, but it is still virtually unknown and never performed. I find it hard to explain why such a large figure remains in the shadows, but the situation is still unchanged.
12th Symphony is written in poetry of Chilean poet and politician Pablo Neruda from the 5th part of the "Canto General", dedicated to the massacre of workers during a strike in 1946 in Santiago. 12th Symphony is often likened to a requiem. This is the only Pettersson's symphony, where the choir is involved, which makes it a symphony-cantata. Expression in his music always hits over the edge, and forms are cross-cutting, continuously flowing from one state to another and reaching huge scales.

Iva Bittova & Vladimir Godar - Mater (2007) - Maykomashalon

Мелодия, которую смело можно ставить на repeat - я давно не встречал таких красивых. Фолк-певица Ива Биттова из Чехословакии широко известна не только волшебным голосом и скрипкой, звучащей как его продолжение, но и экспериментами с различными стилями и большой музыкальной свободой. Вот и данный совместный проект со словацким композитором Владимиром Годаром - нечто единственное в своём роде, хотя столь совершенных мелодий там больше не попадается - недаром именно она звучит и в начале, и в конце альбома. Видимо, медлительно-печальные народные песни зачаровывают не только меня.
Here is a melody that you can instantly turn on repeat - I've not heard so beautiful for a long time. Folk singer Iva Bittová from Czechoslovakia is widely known not only for a magic voice that continues in her violin, but also for an experiments with various styles and for her great musical freedom. Like in this project with the Slovakian composer Vladimir Godar, which is unique in its kind, although there are only one such great melody, and I've not surprised that it sounds at the beginning and at the end of the album. Apparently, slow-sad folk songs fascinate not only me.

Andrew Lloyd Webber - Requiem (1985) - Requiem & Kyrie

На сцену выходит маленький мальчик и поёт потустороннюю мелодию о вечном покое. Потом к нему присоединяются другие детские голоса, а следом за ними Сара Брайтман и Пласидо Доминго. Эндрю Ллойд Уэббер вновь дерзко смешивает в своей потайной алхимической лаборатории классические и джазовые традиции, получая на выходе один из лучших реквиемов 20 века. Эта музыка гораздо серьёзнее, чем можно было ожидать от автора самых знаменитых мюзиклов - она рождена личной болью и посвящена памяти его отца.
A little boy comes on the scene and sing otherworldly melody of eternal peace. Then he's joined by other children's voices, followed by Sarah Brightman and Placido Domingo. Andrew Lloyd Webber again daringly mixes classical and jazz traditions in his secret alchemical laboratory and have one of the best requiems of 20th century at the output. This music is more serious than one might expect from the author of most famous musicals - this music is born from personal pain and dedicated to the memory of his father.

Robert Schumann (1810-1856) - Scenes from Childhood - Child Falling Asleep (1838)

Шуман, на мой взгляд, едва ли не самый сложный композитор-романтик. Его многослойные фактуры трудно играть, его недосказанные фразы трудно понимать, его скрытые за нотами литературные связи трудно читать. И - не знаю, может быть, только мне - очень трудно найти исполнение, в котором Шуман не кажется рудиментом далёкого прошлого, чтимым только из привычки. Я переслушал все классические исполнения, но сердце моё неожиданно возрадовалось только однажды - когда совсем по-новому зазвучала эта музыка в исполнении молодого китайского пианиста Ланг Ланга.
In my opinion, Schumann is maybe most complicated romantic composer ever. His multilayer textures are difficult to perform, his unspoken phrases are difficult to understand, his hidden behind the notes literaly relations are diffecult to read. And (don't know, maybe only for me) very difficult to find a performance, in which Schumann isn't seems like a rudiment of the remote past that's revering only habitually. I've listened to all classical performances, but my heart was touched only one time, when this music resounded quite a new way in the hands of young Chinese pianist Lang Lang.

Anna German - Domenico Scarlatti - Quando in notte

Здесь можно услышать потрясающий голос Анны Герман в непривычном амплуа - арии Доменико Скарлатти, достаточно, кстати, необычной. Голос в этой арии часто оказывается один, без инструментов, как бы отвечая им и вызывая на диалог, и он контрастно нетороплив, будто бег жизни на миг прервал опадающий осенний лист.
Here we can hear an amazing voice of very popular Polish-Russian female singer Anna German assume an unusual role in quite notable aria of Domenico Scarlatti. The voice in this aria often appears solo, without any instruments, as if it answering to them and calling for dialog. And this solo voice is contrastingly unhurried, as though a lifestream was interrupted for a moment by a falling autumn leaf.

Orthrelm - OV (2005)

Это, быть может, самая радикальная музыка, какую мне доводилось слышать. "Это... это бормашина!", "Пилите, Шура, пилите!" и другие цитаты приходят в голову в связи с ней. Помимо того, что она представляет собой, можно сказать, свободные вариации на звук зубной дрели, здесь нарушаются правила приличий по части количества повторений одного и того же, хотя эти безумные парни умудряются играть это вживую, что непостижимо - должны же задымиться пальцы в какой-то момент!
Поразительная ритмика и всегда разные атональные риффы, инструментальный аскетизм (только гитара и ударные) и умение выстроить огромную композицию из очень ограниченного количества элементов, сочетание экстремального конструктивизма и предельной экспрессии - это Orthrelm.
This is maybe the most radical music I've ever heard. "It's... it's dentist's drill!", "Saw, Shura, saw!" and other quotations comes to mind in connection with this music. Besides that this music is really like a free variations on the sound of dentist's drill, here are breaking some rules of propriety about an amount of repeats of one little fragment. But these mad guys contrives to perform it live, and that's unbelievable, because their fingers must begin to smoke at some moment!
Striking rhythmics and always different atonal riffs, instrumental asceticism (only guitar and percussion) and an ability to build huge composition from very limited amount of elements, a combination of extreme constructivism and maximum expression - it's Orthrelm.

Gyorgy Ligeti (1923-2006) - Coulée (1969)

Если вы слышите что-то аморфное и амёбообразное, называющееся при этом музыкой, и думаете, какой же мудрец такое придумал, вспомните о венгерском авангардисте Дьёрде Лигети. Слитный поток звуков, внутри которого происходят микроизменения - его конёк. В этой органной пьесе почти зримо представляется непрерывное вращение какого-то небесного тела, чьи живые очертания ни на миг не остаются прежними.
If you hear some amorphous and amoeboid music and think, who is so wise to invent this, remember Hungarian avant-gardist Gyorgy Ligeti. Solid sound flow with microchanges inside is his strong point. In this organ work a continuous rotation of some celestial body becomes almost visible, and it's living shape not for a moment remains the same.

- Вот именно, они не хотят! Но даже если бы они и согласились, всё равно этого недостаточно.
- Почему?

Вступление к 3-му действию "Тристана и Изольды", где волны океана струнных накатываются на одинокие скалы духовых на далёком острове, куда был сослан Тристан за свою любовь к жене короля, Изольде, завершается одним из самых знаменитых соло английского рожка, абсолютно одинокого в окружающем безмолвии.
Prelude to the 3rd Act of "Tristan and Isolde", where ocean waves of strings are rolling on lonely brass rocks on a far island, where Tristan was exiled for his love to king's wife Isolde, end with one of the most famous English horn solo, completely alone in the surrounding silence.

Anna Mayilyan - Khorhurd Khorin

Несколько лет назад я был на концерте Дживана Гаспаряна в Москве, но более всего из того концерта запомнил выступление певицы Анны Маилян, которая сольно исполняла древние духовные армянские песнопения. Эти напевы надо бы в школе проходить как некие культурные первоосновы, но, увы, их аудиозаписи у нас найти достаточно сложно, не говоря уже об исследованиях. В Сети я нашёл одну единственную запись сольного пения Анны Маилян (шаракан 13 века Хачатура Таронеци), которой и хочу с вами поделиться.
Several years ago I was at a concert of Djivan Gasparyan in Moscow, but most of the concert remember a performance of a female singer Anna Mailyan, who sang a solo ancient Armenian religious chants. These tunes should be in school to learn some cultural fundamentals, but alas! it's very hard to find any audio recordings of these songs here, not to mention the studies. In the web I found only one recording of Anna Mailyan's solo singing (a sharakan by Khachatur Taronetsi from the 13th century), so I want to share it with you.

Очень тонкая и завораживающе таинственная тема медленной части скрипичной сонаты Прокофьева кажется бесконечной и недостижимой, как Млечный путь или северное сияние. Прокофьев, как никто другой, умеет создать сказку и тайну, за каждым звуком его музыки скрывается призрачный свет. В жизни столь деловой и точный, в музыке он неизменно представляется мне звездочётом, который тайком протирает с них пыль на ночном небосводе, а упавшие бережно хранит на книжной полке под прозрачным стеклом.
A very exquisite and charmingly mysterious theme of the slow part of Prokofiev's violit sonata seems to me endless and unachievable like via lactea or nothern lights. Prokofiev is like no other knows how to create a fairy tale and mystery, and a spectral light hides behind each of his sounds. In life he was so business and punctual, but in music I invariably see him like astrologer, who secretely wipes dust from the stars on the night firmament and carefully keeps fallen stars on a bookshelf under a transparent glass.

Когда мы были в Варшаве этим летом, нам довелось услышать там Шопена в очень необычном исполнении - на старинном рояле 19-го века и с оркестром старинных инструментов. Ничего подобного мне слышать не приходилось, и это было открытием какого-то совсем нового для меня Шопена. В записи отличие старинных инструментов от современных чуть менее слышно, чем в концертном зале (у старинного рояля звук значительно тише и как бы плоский, что несколько скрадывают микрофоны), но слушать это - удовольствие ни с чем не сравнимое. Вот, наконец, музыка, запредельно красивая в самом привычном смысле этого слова.
We were in Warsaw this summer and have heard there Chopin in a very unusual performance on an old 19th century grand piano with an orchestra of old instruments. I've never heard nothing of this kind, and it was the discovery of completely new Chopin to me. In this recording the difference between old and contemporary instruments slightly less audible than in a concert hall (an old grand piano have considerably more quiet and "flat" sound, and microphones makes it less evident), but it's uncomparable delightful to listen. So, at last here is a music that can be called exorbitantly beautiful in the most ordinary meaning of this word.

Другой вариант ответа на окружающий шум - делать музыку непосредственно из шума, доведённого до предела. Это похоже на запоздалую месть вашего старого модема. Или на точечный массаж мышц мозга. Мне это помогало иногда в пору экзаменов активировать эрогенные зоны разума. У Apophallation один из наиболее чистых и академичных вариантов шума, не замутнённый присутствием "музыкальных" звуков. Но рекомендую предусмотрительно убавить громкость перед прослушиванием.
Another answer to the surrounding noise is making music directly from the noise, that led to an extreme maximum. It's like a belated revenge of your old modem. Or like a pressure point massage of your brain. It helped me sometimes at the time of examinations to enable the erogenous zones of my mind. In Apophallation music there are one of most clean and academic variants of noise, without cloudy presence of "musical" sounds. But I recommend you to turn down the volume before listening.
