Gentle Giant - Aquiring The Taste (1971) - The Moon Is Down

Мы снова в эфире. В этом году со мною случился Gentle Giant, и можно с уверенностью сказать, что уже лет 10 ни одна группа не затрагивала меня так сильно. Всё их творчество аккуратно укладывается в 70-е годы, за которые они успели создать совершенно уникальную звуковую вселенную. Я давно искал музыку, где классические традиции развития материала воплощены в рок-музыке, но уже почти отчаялся искать - настолько плоско и примитивно это реализовывалось там, где было обещано. И вдруг я натыкаюсь на, оказывается, легендарную группу, основоположника progressive rock, где сложнейшие гармонии, изысканное многоголосие и многочастные формы неразрывно соединены с самым главным - поразительным талантом и драйвом. В итоге вот уже полгода я не могу оторваться от этой музыки.
We're starting again. "Gentle Giant" happened to me this year. And it's safe to say that that even 10 years no one group does not affect me so much. All their work fits neatly in 70th when they had managed to create a very unique sound universe. I was looking for music where the classical traditions of musical evolution embodied in rock music, but almost stopped to search, so flat and primitive it was realized where it was promised. And then I come across the legendary group, the founder of progressive rock, where a complex harmony, exquisite polyphony and multipart forms are inextricably linked to the amazing talent and drive. As the result I can not tear myself away from the music all this time.

Бывают звуки, достигающие столь редкого чувства гармонии, что с ними не хочется ничего делать, не хочется развивать, менять, продолжать, а только повторять снова и снова без изменений. Я обычно терпеть не могу повторы в музыке, но есть исключения из этого правила, когда столь свойственная популярной музыке тяга к точным повторам находит в душе благодарный отклик. У Joni Mitchell великое множество песен, и большинство из них прекрасны, но такая, где ни одной лишней ноты, где всё замерло в мистическом совершенстве, песня, которую хочется слушать бесконечно, только одна.

There are sounds that reach such a rare sense of harmony, that you do not want to do anything with them, you do not want to develop, modify, continue them, but just listen again and again without any changes. I usually hate repetition in music, but there are exceptions, when a propensity to exact reiteration in the popular music finds a grateful response in the soul . Joni Mitchell has a great amount of songs, and most of them are beautiful, but the only one where not a single superfluous note, where everything stood still in the mystical perfection, a song that you want to listen to endlessly.

Leonid Fyodorov - Melt (2005) - Ben Laden

Возможно, это путь из заколдованного круга СМИ в позицию "над" или "в", но точно не "под". Композитор Владимир Мартынов и ансамбль Opus Posth трансцендируют шаманское бормотание Фёдорова, и волны ненависти смываются (дополняются?) волнами спасительного(?) абсурда. В тексте песни присутствует ненормативная лексика.
Maybe it's a way from the vicious circle of mass media to the position "above" or "into" but definetely not "below". Composer Vladimir Martynov and Opus Posth ensemble transcends Fyodorov's shaman mumbling, and waves of hate are washing down (supplementing?) by waves of salvational(?) absurdity. There are abuse words in this song.

Nautilus Pompilius - "Наугад" / "At random" (1990) - Black birds

Пожалуй, единственная рок-композиция, как-то отвечающая "Лесному царю" - "Чёрные птицы" группы Nautilus Pompilius. "Лесной царь" уникален тем, что один певец поёт сразу за 4-х персонажей - рассказчика, отца, ребёнка и самого Лесного царя. В этой же философской притче о природе страха персонажей лишь на одного меньше - рассказчик, царь и Чёрные птицы. В обеих композициях напряжение каждую секунду нарастает до самого конца. Разница реплик персонажей в этой песне подчёркивается ритмически - тараторящий рассказчик, более степенный царь и дерзкая пропажа одной восьмой в репликах птиц - размер меняется с 6/8 на 5/8, в котором песня и заканчивается. Кроме того, это единственная известная мне песня, начинающаяся с тритонанты (весьма далёкой от основного тона тональности на расстоянии тритона). Также меня давно интересует такая тема, как магическое камлание в концовках рок-композиций, когда музыка закольцовывается в какой-то заклинающий круг - здесь это тоже есть, как и почти в каждой композиции этого одного из лучших, на мой взгляд, альбомов русского рока.
Perhaps the only rock song somehow responsible to Schubert's "Erl King" is "Black Birds" of Nautilus Pompilius. "Erl King" is unique in that a singer sings right over the four characters - the narrator, father, child and the Erl King. And in this philosophical parable about the nature of fear are three characters, only one less - the narrator, the king and the Black birds. In both compositions, the suspence increases every second until the end. The different cues of characters in the song emphasizes by the rhythmic - jabbering narrator, than more sedate king and the daring theft of one quaver at the cues of birds, where the time signature changes from 6/8 to 5/8, in which the song ends. In addition, it is only known to me song that starts with tritonic key (es-moll, when the main key is a-moll). I have also long been interested in such topic as a magical shamanistic ritual in the end of rock songs when the music is looped into some conjuring circle - here it is, too, like almost in every song in this one of the best, in my opinion, Russian rock albums. I'm sorry if it's too difficult for my poor English.

Iva Bittova & Vladimir Godar - Mater (2007) - Maykomashalon

Мелодия, которую смело можно ставить на repeat - я давно не встречал таких красивых. Фолк-певица Ива Биттова из Чехословакии широко известна не только волшебным голосом и скрипкой, звучащей как его продолжение, но и экспериментами с различными стилями и большой музыкальной свободой. Вот и данный совместный проект со словацким композитором Владимиром Годаром - нечто единственное в своём роде, хотя столь совершенных мелодий там больше не попадается - недаром именно она звучит и в начале, и в конце альбома. Видимо, медлительно-печальные народные песни зачаровывают не только меня.
Here is a melody that you can instantly turn on repeat - I've not heard so beautiful for a long time. Folk singer Iva Bittová from Czechoslovakia is widely known not only for a magic voice that continues in her violin, but also for an experiments with various styles and for her great musical freedom. Like in this project with the Slovakian composer Vladimir Godar, which is unique in its kind, although there are only one such great melody, and I've not surprised that it sounds at the beginning and at the end of the album. Apparently, slow-sad folk songs fascinate not only me.

Anna German - Domenico Scarlatti - Quando in notte

Здесь можно услышать потрясающий голос Анны Герман в непривычном амплуа - арии Доменико Скарлатти, достаточно, кстати, необычной. Голос в этой арии часто оказывается один, без инструментов, как бы отвечая им и вызывая на диалог, и он контрастно нетороплив, будто бег жизни на миг прервал опадающий осенний лист.
Here we can hear an amazing voice of very popular Polish-Russian female singer Anna German assume an unusual role in quite notable aria of Domenico Scarlatti. The voice in this aria often appears solo, without any instruments, as if it answering to them and calling for dialog. And this solo voice is contrastingly unhurried, as though a lifestream was interrupted for a moment by a falling autumn leaf.

Orthrelm - OV (2005)

Это, быть может, самая радикальная музыка, какую мне доводилось слышать. "Это... это бормашина!", "Пилите, Шура, пилите!" и другие цитаты приходят в голову в связи с ней. Помимо того, что она представляет собой, можно сказать, свободные вариации на звук зубной дрели, здесь нарушаются правила приличий по части количества повторений одного и того же, хотя эти безумные парни умудряются играть это вживую, что непостижимо - должны же задымиться пальцы в какой-то момент!
Поразительная ритмика и всегда разные атональные риффы, инструментальный аскетизм (только гитара и ударные) и умение выстроить огромную композицию из очень ограниченного количества элементов, сочетание экстремального конструктивизма и предельной экспрессии - это Orthrelm.
This is maybe the most radical music I've ever heard. "It's... it's dentist's drill!", "Saw, Shura, saw!" and other quotations comes to mind in connection with this music. Besides that this music is really like a free variations on the sound of dentist's drill, here are breaking some rules of propriety about an amount of repeats of one little fragment. But these mad guys contrives to perform it live, and that's unbelievable, because their fingers must begin to smoke at some moment!
Striking rhythmics and always different atonal riffs, instrumental asceticism (only guitar and percussion) and an ability to build huge composition from very limited amount of elements, a combination of extreme constructivism and maximum expression - it's Orthrelm.

Apophallation - Contradictor/Accomodator (2007) - fence plowing

Другой вариант ответа на окружающий шум - делать музыку непосредственно из шума, доведённого до предела. Это похоже на запоздалую месть вашего старого модема. Или на точечный массаж мышц мозга. Мне это помогало иногда в пору экзаменов активировать эрогенные зоны разума. У Apophallation один из наиболее чистых и академичных вариантов шума, не замутнённый присутствием "музыкальных" звуков. Но рекомендую предусмотрительно убавить громкость перед прослушиванием.
Another answer to the surrounding noise is making music directly from the noise, that led to an extreme maximum. It's like a belated revenge of your old modem. Or like a pressure point massage of your brain. It helped me sometimes at the time of examinations to enable the erogenous zones of my mind. In Apophallation music there are one of most clean and academic variants of noise, without cloudy presence of "musical" sounds. But I recommend you to turn down the volume before listening.

Lambchop - How I quit smoking (1996) - For which we are truly thankful

Бывает, летишь в электрическом небе и думаешь - скорее бы я услышал музыку, которую мог бы не слушать. Звуки, под которые засыпаешь, звуки, под которые хорошо беседовать, звуки, которые наполняют комнату благовониями, не отвлекая на себя внимание. При этом любой примитив, увы, не подходит, ибо раздражает. Для таких случаев ничего лучше Lambchop я за много лет так и не нашёл.
It happens that you fly in an electric sky and think, where can you find music that you don't need to listen. Sound to sleep well, sounds to talk with friends, sounds that fill your room like perfume and don't distract you. At the same time any primitive music don't work, it's annoying. So for such cases for many years I haven't found anything better than Lambchop.

Надо признаться, что интеллектуальная электроника из разряда IDM даже в самых академичных её вариантах всегда пугает меня поэтикой взбесившихся мягких игрушек. Я так и представляю стаи заводных пингвинят, идущих мстить человечеству за его нелюбовь и жестокость. Здесь это тоже есть, но настолько понарошку, что даже не страшно. Лёгкость и витиеватая узорчатость этой лёгкости вызывает детский восторг, как будто кто-то вдруг в один момент надул перед носом изумлённого малыша сразу сотню воздушних шаров.
The truth is that an intellectual electronic music like IDM even in the most academic instances makes me scare of it's poetics of raged cuddly toys. I imagine in details those packs of clockwork little penguins going to take vengeance on humanity for their lack of love and for their cruelty. Here it's presented too, but so pretend that I not afraid. Lightness and ornate sophistication of this lightness stirs up child's delight, as if someone inflated at once about hundred of baloons in front of the astonished kid.

Under Byen - Alt Er Tabt (2010) - 8

Во всём, что делает датская группа Under Byen, разлита какая-то целительная лень. Лень громко петь, лень заботиться о благозвучности аккордов и попадании в них мелодии, лень создавать законченные мелодии и даже, в данном случае, лень играть 8-ю долю такта.
In all that makes the Danish band Under Byen dispersed some curative laziness. Too lazy to sing loudly, too lazy to take care about the harmony of chords and to sync them with melody, too lazy to make complete and formalized tunes and, in this case, too lazy to perform 8th beat of the bar.

Jethro Tull - Benefit (1970) - Sossity You're a Woman

Этот ранний образец арт-рока способен поставить в тупик даже профессионала. Я какое-то время сидел и честно пытался высчитать смены размера, но потом махнул на это рукой. Мало того, что он тут меняется почти в каждом такте непредсказуемым образом, так ещё и мелодия существует, кажется, абсолютно параллельно с аккомпанементом - в своём движении и направлении. А когда ещё и гармонии поплывут куда-то вверх... "Как тут не плакать, как не смеяться"? Я не понимаю, как это можно было сочинить и исполнить, для этого нужна какая-то совсем иначе устроенная голова.
This early example of art-rock can puzzle even a professional. Some time I was honestly trying to count changes of measure, but soon I've waved goodbye to it. It's not enough that time signature in this song changes almost in every bar, moreover the melody seems to be existing completely parallel to the accompaniment in it's own movement and direction. And when even harmonies will float somewhere up... "How not to cry here, how not to laugh?" ("Aquarium"). I don't understand, how it was possible to compose and perform, it requires a very different brain structure.

Portishead - Third (2008) - Hunter

Последний альбом Portishead переполнен тем, что я бы назвал "мистическими мурашками", когда звук пробирается куда-то под кожу. Это ещё один пример того, как действительно сложная музыка может быть очень популярной. 10 лет молчания ради одного альбома - большая цена большого искусства.
The last album of Portishead overfilled with that strange feeling that I call "mystic goose pimples", when sound goes somewhere underneath my skin. This is another example when really complex music can be extremely popular. 10 years of silence for one album is a big price for a big art.

Самое Большое Простое Число - Маленькие человечки (2007)

Полагаю, что это послание из космоса уже достигло отдалённых уголков Рунета, но это не повод не послушать его ещё раз. Замечу только, что в песне помимо очень сильного текста есть скрытое послание: если прокрутить песню задом наперёд, можно услышать, что начинается она с телерепортажа о хоре пенсионеров из Свердловской области, поющем песни "Тату" и "Глюкозы", а заканчивается рассказом об акции "Беслан - город мира", где, помимо прочего, первоклассники рисуют ангелов-хранителей.

I only want to say that in this song besides a very good text there are some secret message: if we will listen this file in reverse, we'll hear, that the song begins with a TV-news fragment about a choir of pensioners from Sverdlovsk region singing contemporary songs of popular russian pop-groups "Tattoo" and "Glucose", and ends with a story about an action "Beslan is a city of peace", where in addition first graders draws guardian angels.

Guano Apes. La Noix (2004?)

Шедевр альтернативной музыки от Guano Apes. Взрывающий мозг французский шансон от непредсказуемых немцев, где размер в припеве прыгает аж на 11/8 под съехавшие с катушек хроматичекие гармонии. На мой взгляд, меткие смены размера в тяжёлой музыке могут приносить способному на синхронную вибрацию слушателю ни с чем не сравнимое наслаждение.
A chef d'oeuvre of alternative music from Guano Apes. Mindblowing french chanson from unpredictable Germans, where a time signature in refrain is jumping on 11/8 to the accompaniment of flying off the handle chromatic chords. I think that so accurate changes of time in heavy music can bring an uncomparable enjoyment to a listener with a capability of synchronous musical vibrations.
