Gentle Giant - Aquiring The Taste (1971) - The Moon Is Down

Мы снова в эфире. В этом году со мною случился Gentle Giant, и можно с уверенностью сказать, что уже лет 10 ни одна группа не затрагивала меня так сильно. Всё их творчество аккуратно укладывается в 70-е годы, за которые они успели создать совершенно уникальную звуковую вселенную. Я давно искал музыку, где классические традиции развития материала воплощены в рок-музыке, но уже почти отчаялся искать - настолько плоско и примитивно это реализовывалось там, где было обещано. И вдруг я натыкаюсь на, оказывается, легендарную группу, основоположника progressive rock, где сложнейшие гармонии, изысканное многоголосие и многочастные формы неразрывно соединены с самым главным - поразительным талантом и драйвом. В итоге вот уже полгода я не могу оторваться от этой музыки.
We're starting again. "Gentle Giant" happened to me this year. And it's safe to say that that even 10 years no one group does not affect me so much. All their work fits neatly in 70th when they had managed to create a very unique sound universe. I was looking for music where the classical traditions of musical evolution embodied in rock music, but almost stopped to search, so flat and primitive it was realized where it was promised. And then I come across the legendary group, the founder of progressive rock, where a complex harmony, exquisite polyphony and multipart forms are inextricably linked to the amazing talent and drive. As the result I can not tear myself away from the music all this time.

Nautilus Pompilius - "Наугад" / "At random" (1990) - Black birds

Пожалуй, единственная рок-композиция, как-то отвечающая "Лесному царю" - "Чёрные птицы" группы Nautilus Pompilius. "Лесной царь" уникален тем, что один певец поёт сразу за 4-х персонажей - рассказчика, отца, ребёнка и самого Лесного царя. В этой же философской притче о природе страха персонажей лишь на одного меньше - рассказчик, царь и Чёрные птицы. В обеих композициях напряжение каждую секунду нарастает до самого конца. Разница реплик персонажей в этой песне подчёркивается ритмически - тараторящий рассказчик, более степенный царь и дерзкая пропажа одной восьмой в репликах птиц - размер меняется с 6/8 на 5/8, в котором песня и заканчивается. Кроме того, это единственная известная мне песня, начинающаяся с тритонанты (весьма далёкой от основного тона тональности на расстоянии тритона). Также меня давно интересует такая тема, как магическое камлание в концовках рок-композиций, когда музыка закольцовывается в какой-то заклинающий круг - здесь это тоже есть, как и почти в каждой композиции этого одного из лучших, на мой взгляд, альбомов русского рока.
Perhaps the only rock song somehow responsible to Schubert's "Erl King" is "Black Birds" of Nautilus Pompilius. "Erl King" is unique in that a singer sings right over the four characters - the narrator, father, child and the Erl King. And in this philosophical parable about the nature of fear are three characters, only one less - the narrator, the king and the Black birds. In both compositions, the suspence increases every second until the end. The different cues of characters in the song emphasizes by the rhythmic - jabbering narrator, than more sedate king and the daring theft of one quaver at the cues of birds, where the time signature changes from 6/8 to 5/8, in which the song ends. In addition, it is only known to me song that starts with tritonic key (es-moll, when the main key is a-moll). I have also long been interested in such topic as a magical shamanistic ritual in the end of rock songs when the music is looped into some conjuring circle - here it is, too, like almost in every song in this one of the best, in my opinion, Russian rock albums. I'm sorry if it's too difficult for my poor English.

Under Byen - Alt Er Tabt (2010) - 8

Во всём, что делает датская группа Under Byen, разлита какая-то целительная лень. Лень громко петь, лень заботиться о благозвучности аккордов и попадании в них мелодии, лень создавать законченные мелодии и даже, в данном случае, лень играть 8-ю долю такта.
In all that makes the Danish band Under Byen dispersed some curative laziness. Too lazy to sing loudly, too lazy to take care about the harmony of chords and to sync them with melody, too lazy to make complete and formalized tunes and, in this case, too lazy to perform 8th beat of the bar.

Jethro Tull - Benefit (1970) - Sossity You're a Woman

Этот ранний образец арт-рока способен поставить в тупик даже профессионала. Я какое-то время сидел и честно пытался высчитать смены размера, но потом махнул на это рукой. Мало того, что он тут меняется почти в каждом такте непредсказуемым образом, так ещё и мелодия существует, кажется, абсолютно параллельно с аккомпанементом - в своём движении и направлении. А когда ещё и гармонии поплывут куда-то вверх... "Как тут не плакать, как не смеяться"? Я не понимаю, как это можно было сочинить и исполнить, для этого нужна какая-то совсем иначе устроенная голова.
This early example of art-rock can puzzle even a professional. Some time I was honestly trying to count changes of measure, but soon I've waved goodbye to it. It's not enough that time signature in this song changes almost in every bar, moreover the melody seems to be existing completely parallel to the accompaniment in it's own movement and direction. And when even harmonies will float somewhere up... "How not to cry here, how not to laugh?" ("Aquarium"). I don't understand, how it was possible to compose and perform, it requires a very different brain structure.

Guano Apes. La Noix (2004?)

Шедевр альтернативной музыки от Guano Apes. Взрывающий мозг французский шансон от непредсказуемых немцев, где размер в припеве прыгает аж на 11/8 под съехавшие с катушек хроматичекие гармонии. На мой взгляд, меткие смены размера в тяжёлой музыке могут приносить способному на синхронную вибрацию слушателю ни с чем не сравнимое наслаждение.
A chef d'oeuvre of alternative music from Guano Apes. Mindblowing french chanson from unpredictable Germans, where a time signature in refrain is jumping on 11/8 to the accompaniment of flying off the handle chromatic chords. I think that so accurate changes of time in heavy music can bring an uncomparable enjoyment to a listener with a capability of synchronous musical vibrations.
