Несколько лет назад я был на концерте Дживана Гаспаряна в Москве, но более всего из того концерта запомнил выступление певицы Анны Маилян, которая сольно исполняла древние духовные армянские песнопения. Эти напевы надо бы в школе проходить как некие культурные первоосновы, но, увы, их аудиозаписи у нас найти достаточно сложно, не говоря уже об исследованиях. В Сети я нашёл одну единственную запись сольного пения Анны Маилян (шаракан 13 века Хачатура Таронеци), которой и хочу с вами поделиться.
Several years ago I was at a concert of Djivan Gasparyan in Moscow, but most of the concert remember a performance of a female singer Anna Mailyan, who sang a solo ancient Armenian religious chants. These tunes should be in school to learn some cultural fundamentals, but alas! it's very hard to find any audio recordings of these songs here, not to mention the studies. In the web I found only one recording of Anna Mailyan's solo singing (a sharakan by Khachatur Taronetsi from the 13th century), so I want to share it with you.

Прокофьев, как никто другой, умеет создать сказку и тайну, за каждым звуком его музыки скрывается призрачный свет. В жизни столь деловой и точный, в музыке он неизменно представляется мне звездочётом, который тайком протирает с них пыль на ночном небосводе, а упавшие бережно хранит на книжной полке под прозрачным стеклом.
A very exquisite and charmingly mysterious theme of the slow part of Prokofiev's violit sonata seems to me endless and unachievable like via lactea or nothern lights. Prokofiev is like no other knows how to create a fairy tale and mystery, and a spectral light hides behind each of his sounds. In life he was so business and punctual, but in music I invariably see him like astrologer, who secretely wipes dust from the stars on the night firmament and carefully keeps fallen stars on a bookshelf under a transparent glass.

Когда мы были в Варшаве этим летом, нам довелось услышать там Шопена в очень необычном исполнении - на старинном рояле 19-го века и с оркестром старинных инструментов. Ничего подобного мне слышать не приходилось, и это было открытием какого-то совсем нового для меня Шопена. В записи отличие старинных инструментов от современных чуть менее слышно, чем в концертном зале (у старинного рояля звук значительно тише и как бы плоский, что несколько скрадывают микрофоны), но слушать это - удовольствие ни с чем не сравнимое. Вот, наконец, музыка, запредельно красивая в самом привычном смысле этого слова.
We were in Warsaw this summer and have heard there Chopin in a very unusual performance on an old 19th century grand piano with an orchestra of old instruments. I've never heard nothing of this kind, and it was the discovery of completely new Chopin to me. In this recording the difference between old and contemporary instruments slightly less audible than in a concert hall (an old grand piano have considerably more quiet and "flat" sound, and microphones makes it less evident), but it's uncomparable delightful to listen. So, at last here is a music that can be called exorbitantly beautiful in the most ordinary meaning of this word.

Другой вариант ответа на окружающий шум - делать музыку непосредственно из шума, доведённого до предела. Это похоже на запоздалую месть вашего старого модема. Или на точечный массаж мышц мозга. Мне это помогало иногда в пору экзаменов активировать эрогенные зоны разума. У Apophallation один из наиболее чистых и академичных вариантов шума, не замутнённый присутствием "музыкальных" звуков. Но рекомендую предусмотрительно убавить громкость перед прослушиванием.
Another answer to the surrounding noise is making music directly from the noise, that led to an extreme maximum. It's like a belated revenge of your old modem. Or like a pressure point massage of your brain. It helped me sometimes at the time of examinations to enable the erogenous zones of my mind. In Apophallation music there are one of most clean and academic variants of noise, without cloudy presence of "musical" sounds. But I recommend you to turn down the volume before listening.

Luciano Berio (1925-2003) - Sinfonia (1968), parts 3-4

Итак, вот всё те же Swingle Singers в составе одного из ключевых сочинений 20 века - Синфонии Берио. Именно она положила начало постмодернизму, полистилистике и коллажной технике в музыке. Конкретно в этой 3-й части перемешано огромное количество цитат - в основе скерцо Малера, помимо него здесь звучат Равель, Дебюсси, Шёнберг, Бетховен, Стравинский и другие, и поверх музыки читаются тексты Джойса и Беккета. Век звукозаписи и радио заставил по-другому взглянуть на природу музыки, когда одновременно нас окружают очень разные музыкальные звуки - от соседей, с улицы, из музыкальных ларьков, из проезжающих машин, с разных радиостанций... Включенность в настоящее сплетает эти нити в единую музыку.
So, the same Swingle Singers in one of key musical compositions of 20th century - Sinfonia Berio. Exactly from this work begins post-modernism, polystylism and collage technique in music. Specifically in this third part there are very many quotations like Mahler's scherzo as the basis, and also Ravel, Debussy, Schoenberg, Beethoven, Stravinsky and others, plus texts of Joyce and Beckett. Age of sound recording and radio completely turns our idea about the nature of music, when you simultaneously hear very different musical sounds - from neighbours, from the street, from music shops, from riding cars, from different radio stations... When you turned on into reality, all these sounds interwines in one united music.

Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Sonata No. 7 (1798) - II. Largo e mesto

Как мне кажется, у Гленна Гульда самое невыносимо медленное и одинокое исполнение этой музыки. Минуте на 6-й становится даже страшно. Страшно от какой-то непостижимой абсолютности одиночества, как перед лицом смерти. Как будто весь мир вдруг предстаёт перед глазами в той ослепительной красоте, какую никогда раньше не замечал, и в этот же миг понимаешь, что прощаешься с ним навсегда.
А я прощаюсь с вами примерно на неделю - уезжаю играть концерт в Петербурге, вернусь 9-го. До встречи!
It seems to me that this Glenn Gould's performance of this music is unbearably slow and lonely. About 6th minute it even becomes scary. Frightened by some inscrutable absoluteness of solitude, like in the face of death. As if the whole world suddenly appears before your eyes in the dazzling beauty, which had never before noticed, and at this very moment you realize that saying goodbye to him forever.

Бывает, летишь в электрическом небе и думаешь - скорее бы я услышал музыку, которую мог бы не слушать. Звуки, под которые засыпаешь, звуки, под которые хорошо беседовать, звуки, которые наполняют комнату благовониями, не отвлекая на себя внимание. При этом любой примитив, увы, не подходит, ибо раздражает. Для таких случаев ничего лучше Lambchop я за много лет так и не нашёл.
It happens that you fly in an electric sky and think, where can you find music that you don't need to listen. Beat Furrer - FAMA (2005) - Scene IV

Я был на генеральной репетиции этой оперы в Москве года три назад. Огромный ангар, в центре которого расположен куб, состоящий из вращающихся вертикальных створок (см. здесь), разные стороны которых по-разному отражают звук. Крыша также может открываться. Зрители располагаются внутри куба, а почти все музыканты снаружи. Эффект нахождения "внутри" музыки колоссален. В данной сцене поющие то появляются внутри куба, то выходят наружу, перекликаясь, звуки перемешиваются и висят где-то под крышей, а крыша тихо едет.
I was at the dress rehearsal of this opera in Moscow about three years ago. The huge hangar, in the center of which the cube located, formed by rotating vertical leafs (see picture here), and opposite sides of these leafs are reflecting sound differently. The roof can also be opened. Spectators are sitting inside the cube, and almost all the musicians are placed outside. Effect of being "inside" the music is colossal. In this scene singers sometimes appears inside the cube, sometimes go outside, echoing sounds are mixing and hanging somewhere under the roof, and the roof is riding quietly (in Russian "his roof is riding" means that someone is off his rocker).

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621) - Ricercare a1 D.17

По высоким античным колоннам взгляд постепенно поднимается ввысь в надежде увидеть поддерживаемый ими свод, но там лишь небо, а колонны - полые трубы органа, основание которого уходит куда-то под землю. Ни с какой точки нельзя увидеть его целиком, и кажется, что слушатель ему совершенно безразличен - он играл до его появления и продолжит играть после его исчезновения.
Along ancient columns sight gradually rises upward hoping to see the housetop they support, but there's only sky, and columns are hollow pipes of a huge organ, whose base is somewhere under the ground. From any point of view you can not see the whole thing, and it seems that the listener completely indifferent to him - he played before his appearance and will continue to play after his disappearance.

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1514-1594) - Missa "Ut, re, mi, fa, sol, la" - Agnus Dei

Если пытаться рассказать историю музыки прошлого тысячелетия в двух словах, выглядело бы это примерно так: первые лет 600 правила полифония, где внутренне самостоятельные голоса жили своей жизнью, подчиняясь общим правилам общежития, но не образовывая союзы, а в следующие лет 300-400 основой музыки стала гармония, где главное - аккорд, многоголосное созвучие, где даже количество голосов не принципиально, и лишь один самостоятельный голос над ним - мелодия, для которой остальные голоса как лепестки роз под ногами. Момент встречи полифонии и гармонии - как встреча двух влюблённых. Один из первых композиторов, через сердце которого прошла взрывная волна этой встречи - Джованни Пьерлуиджи да Палестрина. Эти первые трезвучия - как подснежники, на наш слух они могут казаться пресными, как макароны без соли, но стоит войти во вкус, и тихий свет этой музыки манной небесной насыщает алчущего.

Time of the meeting of polyphony and harmony - as the meeting of two lovers. One of the first composers through the heart of which was the blast of this meeting - Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. These first triad - as snowdrops, in our hearing, they may seem insipid as pasta without salt, but it's worth to enter the taste and the soft light of this music fills hunger like manna from heaven.

Jürgen Knieper - Wings of Desire (1987) - Kathedrale Der Bucher

Из саундтрека к фильму Вима Вендерса "Небо над Берлином".
Редкая птица из саундтрека долетит до середины полосы прокрутки. То, что в фильме вызывает трепет, без фильма обычно навевает скуку. Здесь же пример того, как самыми простыми средствами, почти на двух нотах, создаётся целая симфония из множества голосов, действительно создающая ощущение полной прозрачности человеческих душ для взора ангелов.

Conlon Nancarrow - Study for player piano No.18 (~1946-1960)

Конлон Нэнкэрроу - удивительный американский композитор, большинство своих произведений написавший для механического пианино. Только на этом редком инструменте было возможно сохранить в точности те ритмические закономерности, которые он открывал в своей музыке, ибо пианисты тогда не могли это точно исполнить. Он создавал множество независимых ритмических пластов, которые прихотливым образом взаимодействовали друг с другом, при этом получая часто вполне блюзовые сочетания. Данный этюд кажется мне иллюстрацией того, как в мозгу рождаются, как зажигаются звёзды, одна за другой нейронные связи при активном размышлении.
Этот композитор неожиданно оказался мне очень близок, я использую в работе почти ту же самую технику, в частности, в сочинении "Блажен", что будет вновь исполнено 30 октября в концертном зале На Кисловке в 19:00. И у меня тоже не получалось пока идеально сыграть эти сложные ритмы - хотя, может быть, в этот раз удастся?
Conlon Nancarrow is a wonderful American composer, who wrote most of his works for player piano. Only on this rare musical instrument was possible to maintain precisely the rhythmic patterns that he discovered in his music. Pianists of past could not perform it exactly. He was creating a set of independent rhythmic layers that are intrically interact with each other, for all this often giving rise to blues combinations. This study seems to me an illustration of how neuronal connections are appears in mind like a shining stars in active thinking.
This composer suddenly appeared very close to me, I use in almost the same technique, in particular, in the work "Blessed", that will be performed again on October 30 in the concert hall at Kislovka at 19:00. And I also did not perform perfectly these complex rhythms - though perhaps this time will be?

F.X. Randomiz - Metix V.1.0b7 (1999, Sonig Comp.)

Надо признаться, что интеллектуальная электроника из разряда IDM даже в самых академичных её вариантах всегда пугает меня поэтикой взбесившихся мягких игрушек. Я так и представляю стаи заводных пингвинят, идущих мстить человечеству за его нелюбовь и жестокость. Здесь это тоже есть, но настолько понарошку, что даже не страшно. Лёгкость и витиеватая узорчатость этой лёгкости вызывает детский восторг, как будто кто-то вдруг в один момент надул перед носом изумлённого малыша сразу сотню воздушних шаров.
The truth is that an intellectual electronic music like IDM even in the most academic instances makes me scare of it's poetics of raged cuddly toys. I imagine in details those packs of clockwork little penguins going to take vengeance on humanity for their lack of love and for their cruelty. Here it's presented too, but so pretend that I not afraid. Lightness and ornate sophistication of this lightness stirs up child's delight, as if someone inflated at once about hundred of baloons in front of the astonished kid.

Arnold Schoenberg - Quartet No.1 (1905) (fragment)

Но иногда с ним бывали такие вот приступы, некий порядок мстил ему за то, что он им пренебрегал. Прямо на полу, почти засунув голову в обувной ящик, Мага, похоже, спала. Время от времени слышалось посапывание Рокамадура, но Грегоровиус все больше и больше погружался в музыку - и открыл вдруг, что может уступить и безропотно позволить увести себя, переселиться на какое-то время в этого давно умершего и погребенного жителя Вены.

Under Byen - Alt Er Tabt (2010) - 8

Во всём, что делает датская группа Under Byen, разлита какая-то целительная лень. Лень громко петь, лень заботиться о благозвучности аккордов и попадании в них мелодии, лень создавать законченные мелодии и даже, в данном случае, лень играть 8-ю долю такта.
In all that makes the Danish band Under Byen dispersed some curative laziness. Too lazy to sing loudly, too lazy to take care about the harmony of chords and to sync them with melody, too lazy to make complete and formalized tunes and, in this case, too lazy to perform 8th beat of the bar.

Åke Parmerud - Grains of voices (1995)

Написанная бывшим рокером история мира, расказанная звуками за полчаса - быть может, единственное произведение академической электроники, которое я могу назвать гениальным. В своё время "Grains of voices" ("Зерна голосов") прокатилось по моей жизни колесом, навсегда изменив представление о возможностях электроакустичекой музыки, настолько глубоким оказался результат смешения интонаций множества голосов всех национальностей в единое музыкальное целое. Кроме того, это один из самых сильных примеров переосмысленного цитирования чужой музыки. Разъятый на клочки "Плач Дидоны" здесь проходит красной нитью через весь финальный отрезок, постепенно переходящий от драмы к ритуалу вплоть до финального Армагеддона, когда шумом голосов переполнилась земля и Бог вскричал: "Тихо!".
Written by a former rocker history of the world, narrated by sounds within half an hour, is maybe the only one academic electronic composition that I can call great. In due time "Grains of voices" went for a ride by the wheel through my life and changes my idea about possibilities of electroacoustic music forever, so profound was the result of mixing the intonations of many voices of all nations into the one musical whole. In addition it's one of the strongest examples of reconsidered quoting of another's music. Dismembered into pieces "Dido's Lament" here runs all through the final segment, gradually passing from a drama to a ritual up to the final Armageddon, when the noise of voices overflowed Earth, and God cried: "Silence!".

Стоп, откуда в этой изысканной коллекции, где вместо 40-й симфонии Моцарта слушают 1-ю, этот безусловный суперхит барочной музыки? Лишь снова удивиться, как эта музыка на протяжении стольких веков остаётся столь пронзительно современной и способной вызвать слёзы даже у далёких от музыки людей. Дидона плачет о возлюбленном муже, покидающем её ради долга, и бросается на меч, чем и заканчивается опера. Также это один из самых известных примеров т.н. basso ostinato, когда нисходящая линия баса повторяется снова и снова без изменений, почти как современные loops, только гораздо, гораздо медленнее.
